Nourishing hair & skin care with New Nordic

Have the cooler months left your skin dry and desperate for some hydration? Your hair lacking lustre and demanding more attention? Ours too, which is why we tested out the latest skin and hair routine from New Nordic.

The cooler months have left my skin desperate for hydration, my hair lacking lustre and my nails brittle. No matter how much moisturiser I lathered onto my skin or how many hair conditioning treatments I used, I couldn’t seem to reach that all over beauty “glow”. I was desperate for my hair and skin to “glow” like it did when I was pregnant a year ago. Instead, I had baby hair growth, skin pigmentation and dryness. I decided to shake up my skin and haircare routine and test out New Nordic’s Beauty In & Out and Hair Volume range.

New Nordic is a Swedish-based company founded in 1990 by Karl Kristian Bergman Jensen. In 2004, François Gérard joined New Nordic, and together with Jensen spends time travelling all over the world investigating rare botanicals in their unspoiled environments.

Treating skin from within

New Nordic’s Beauty In & Out has a strong focus on pomegranate and how powerful it can be for the skin. Pomegranate is a fruit-bearing deciduous shrub native to the region extending from Iran to northern India. It’s rich in polyphenols like anthocyanins, ellagic acid and many other plant polyphenols. Pomegranate extract is an effective natural ingredient to use on the skin as it helps to detox free radicals while also repairing skin that may have been damaged from environmental factors like UV radiation.

Given I live in Byron Bay and spend a lot of time at the beach, my skin was feeling the effects of my environment. Plus, being a new mum meant my self-care had dropped a few places on the priority list. It was time to take that back and give my skin some love.

My new skincare routine consists of New Nordic’s Natural Magic Firming Serum, which I use morning and night. With ingredients like pomegranate, sea buckthorn and apricot, the serum smells like summer. Sea buckthorn contains a high dose of vitamin C as well as three times more vitamin A than carrots and a potent amount of vitamin E. The serum contains hyaluronic acid, which is a must when it comes to quality skincare. Hyaluronic acid works by penetrating the skin with small particles to successfully lock in moisture. This helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve firmness.

Following the serum, I apply the Anti-Ageing Cream, which I love for its thick consistency. Adding some much-needed hydration and elasticity, the cream smells delicious and is a delight to rub in.

Next, I gently dab on some Amazing Eye Cream. Being a mother of a one-year-old, I have certainly noticed a few more smile lines (read: tired lines) around my eyes. This eye cream is an essential component of my new skincare routine. Harnessing natural ingredients like horse chestnut and aescin, which carry a powerful antioxidant called proanthocyanidins, the eye cream helps to stabilise the skin’s collagen and elastin. The cream is lightweight and lovely to use.

Once a week, usually on a Sunday, I apply the Intense Marine Mask and leave it on for 10 minutes while I soak in the bath and have some “me” time. I enjoy using masks and this one does not disappoint. Containing red seaweed and Peruvian tara fruit, the mask provides a lifting effect and reduces the appearance of fine lines. I love massaging the mask into my skin for the ritual it provides: solo time soaking in the tub. As soon as I smell the mask my stresses just melt away. My olfactory system sends signals to my brain to relax, restore and rejuvenate.

I’ve also started taking New Nordic’s Collagen Filler. It’s a herbal supplement that contains collagen, pomegranate, tomato, natural astaxanthin and vitamin C. The daily tablet helps to aid connective tissue production and maintain overall skin health. The tablet is based on maritime collagen like the natural collagen present in the elastic connective tissues of the skin.

Nourishing hair care

New Nordic’s Hair Volume is an award-winning formula that supports hair growth. With natural ingredients like apple extract, millet and horsetail plant as well as zinc and biotin, the whole range is rich in protein and keratin, both of which are known for strengthening hair. It’s hard to find a natural shampoo and conditioner that leaves my hair clean without compromising shine. New Nordic’s Hair Volume Shampoo and Conditioner not only repairs my surf- and sun-bleached hair, it adds softness.

Once a week, I use New Nordic’s Repair Mask. It’s thick, creamy and I love slathering my scalp with it before giving myself a head massage. The mask, which contains apple and coconut, helps to strengthen hair strands. Given I experienced some hair loss during pregnancy, this mask is a welcomed addition to my weekly routine.

Used in combination with Hair Volume’s herbal supplement, my hair has never looked healthier. The shine I loved from my pregnancy hair has returned — without the morning sickness and the growing belly.
