[edit]Seems broken. --Pmsyyz 07:36, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- It works fine on Main Page. Raul654 07:54, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- No, the English main page uses {{Motd2}}. This is supposed to be like {{Potd}}, for use on user pages. Where it is used on the Turkish main page, it is broken. --Pmsyyz 08:23, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- Ahh, I see the problem. When I designed this template, I envision that the text (such as Template:Motd-en/03-27) would be the link you click on. If there is ANYTHING wiki-link in the text there (such as the link to Antonio Vivaldi) this template will be broken. So either we tell people not to use this template, we make it a point not to link anything in teh descriptions, someone needs to modify this template to work differently. Raul654 08:38, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- Since this template is not used much yet, how about we just get it unprotected so we can work on it? I think there is a template to request unprotection on en. Is there one on Commons? --Pmsyyz 08:49, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- (I'm an admin) unprotected. Raul654 08:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Thumbtime
[edit]Can we incorporate the thumbtime parameter for videos here somehow?--Kozuch (talk) 07:03, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
- I see, there is an extra template for that already... it is only hidden in the "Advanced options" menu...--Kozuch (talk) 07:17, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Macedonian for "No media of the day today"
[edit]{{Editprotected}} Hello. Can I have this inserted as the Macedonian translation of "No media of the day today".
|mk=Нема снимка за денес.
Thanks. --B. Jankuloski (talk) 02:47, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
Done, thanks for helping (it would be better if we could get some new media to be featured, though...) Jean-Fred (talk) 11:03, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Link to media description page
[edit]There should be an easy way to access the file description page − clicking on it does not work, obviously. Any idea how to nively integrate this ? Jean-Fred (talk) 15:54, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- @Jean-Frédéric although there isnt an obvious link to file page (blame mediaplayer), there're several ways a user can go straight to file page:
- before clicking and opening the mediaplayer popup, in the corner there's a mini button File:Magnify-clip (sans arrow).svg. click it and it goes to file page.
- ctrl+click the file goes to file page.
- upon opening the popup, in the corner there's a "circle i" button that goes to file page.
- i'm not sure if these are intuitive enough and sufficient for newbies of this website though. RoyZuo (talk) 13:50, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
Documentation
[edit]Please replace everything between the noinclude tags with {{Documentation}}. I've already moved the relevant bits to Template:Motd/doc (including the categories). Rd232 (talk) 22:43, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Localization
[edit]Commons:Main page templates seems to be outdated. It seems for example that the "help" links are not localized via eg Template:MotdHelp (de), but via Template:Motd/help/de. I'm not sure about the others, but eg the "download" link doesn't seem used at all (and if it's needed, we have {{int:download}}). Can anyone clarify? Rd232 (talk) 20:19, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Template redesign
[edit]Any thoughts on redesigning the template? In my opinion the template structure is inefficient and the documentation pages are bad at best. There are several suboages for descriptions and thumbnails that could be done on one page. There are also several different templates where you have to enter the date and the flename multiple times. My goal would be to redesign the current template so that it would be easier to use. --D-Kuru (talk) 11:20, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
- Since there are no comments on the redesign I interpret this as noone cares and that I'm good to start. --D-Kuru (talk) 10:10, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
- @D-Kuru hi! I agree with you that creating multiple templates is probably unnecessary and they could be merged in 1, but i dont have energy for this colossal task of redesigning it. Also, since your 2019 comment, the trouble of entering data has been hopefully partly mitigated by using Template:Motd/Day/preload. have you tried? :)
- i had an idea of making an interactive app like com:vfc that can simplify the whole process of creating multiple templates to clicks and some typing. (land on a file page which you want to be motd, click button to start the popup, set thumbtime (optional), type year and month, shows a calendar which shows which days are not filled yet, click to pick a day, enter caption (in a pre-defined default language), optionally enter captions in more languages, click submit, and the gadget creates all the templates),
- but i wont have time for making it. RoyZuo (talk) 13:43, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
No media of the day today at the main page with the caption of current MOTD in English
[edit]{{Edit protected}} It seems that the translated template is somehow broken and do not display the media itself. For example, please see today's template for Ukranian. English version for me on main page also has no media, and at the same time, the caption is there. — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 08:33, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Pacha Tchernof: I’m pretty sure it’s caused by this edit. Unfortunately I can’t revert the edit, as the page can be edited only by admins as long as it’s on the main page. I wrote at COM:AN/BP in the hope that it’s more quickly noticed there. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:01, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Tacsipacsi: Actually, the situation with the user who made the edit is a bit more trickier than it could look like at the first glance. Here is a second glance. — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 21:53, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- At third glance, it’s not that tricky, as I explained there. The edit has been reverted in the meanwhile, so the edit request is fulfilled. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:29, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Edit template for other documents
[edit]Hi, Could it be possible to edit the MOTD template to show a different page than the first for other documents, e.g. Template:Motd/2022-02-14? Real content starts at the 13th page. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:18, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
Only displaying "Problems playing the file?" if the media does not play
[edit]I think have the link "Problems playing the file?" prominently on the Main page for all users is not appropriate anymore. Most devices can play videos and audio files just fine by default at this point. Could this be changed so it only displays once the video doesn't play / there is an error? If you know how this could be done please add this info here. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:34, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Template:Editnotices/Group/Template:Motd
[edit]@Speravir with regard to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?diff=969955209 , i removed a previous identical instruction, because i think 80% or probably >95% of motd/yyyy-mm-dd are created by users who already know where they should place the filename. to select and replace the instruction is simply not neccessary and waste of time for most users who actually use the preload.
so here's my suggestion:
- edit Template:Editnotices/Group/Template:Motd to remove the collapse box. it's not that much space so no need to collapse.
- the instructions will be made more succinct and clear.
- remove the instruction from Template:Motd/Day/preload so users can paste and save without the inconvenience of removing it by themselves.

Making the template closer to Template:Potd
[edit]{{Editprotected}}
I would like to change this template to be based off of Template:Potd to fix the centering issue, and remove the LangSwitch.
Tell me if this isn't the intended behaviour.
Template:Motd/Potd-base is the template from this code. Sorry if this is against the rules but I don't know how else this would be done.
{|class="toccolours {{#switch: {{{float|right}}} | left = floatleft | right = floatright | center = center }}" style="width:{{{width|300}}}px;text-align:center" !lang="{{{lang|en}}}"| {{ Motd/name/{{{lang|en}}} }} {{#if:{{{show_date|}}}| {{!}}- {{!}} {{date|{{#time:Y||en}}|{{#time:m||en}}|{{#time:d||en}}|lang={{{lang|en}}}}} }} |- |class="toccolours" style="padding:0"| {{#ifexist:File:{{Motd/{{#timel:Y-m-d||{{{lang|en}}}}}}}|[[File:{{Motd/{{#timel:Y-m-d||{{{lang|en}}}}}}}|{{{width|300}}}px|{{#ifexist:Template:Motd/{{#timel:Y-m-d||{{{lang|en}}}}} thumbtime|thumbtime={{Motd/{{#timel:Y-m-d||{{{lang|en}}}}} thumbtime}}}}]]|{{ Motd/nomedia/{{{lang|en}}} }} }} |- | {{Potd/description display|type=motd|date={{#time:Y-m-d||en}}|lang={{{lang|en}}}|fallback_lang={{{fallback_lang|en}}}|noeditlinks={{{noeditlinks|}}}}} {{#if:{{{nohelp|}}}|| ---- {{lang|{{{lang|en}}}|{{#ifexist:Template:Motd/help/{{{lang}}}|{{Motd/help/{{lang}}}}|{{Motd/help/en}}}}}}}} |}

- Looks broadly reasonable to me, but I’d like to leave some time for others to review. And shouldn’t the nomedia message have the same kind of “if exist then /lang else /en” incantation as e.g. the help message below? Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 20:33, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Changed, thx for telling me about that one. Nothing bad seems to happen if I do.Kxeo (talk) 13:15, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hm, I don’t think that’s what I had in mind… I meant that the transclusion of the nomedia message needs to check whether the message exists in that language, and otherwise (probably) fall back to English. I now notice that the help message isn’t actually doing that (it just shows nothing if the message doesn’t exist), but I believe I’ve seen it in other templates. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 20:37, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Should have done the longer form instead of the short. Oops. Kxeo (talk) 21:34, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
